From 1^st July 2006 to 30 November 2007, the model project "Development of a web-based information system for near-natural greening measures" for selected model regions in Saxony-Anhalt was carried out at the Prof. Hellriegel Institute. This project was funded within the framework of the Operational Programme of the State of Saxony-Anhalt, which was jointly financed by the European Union, the Federal Government and the State of Saxony-Anhalt. (Under this programme, the European Agricultural Guidance and Guarantee Fund (EAGGF Guidance Section) contributed 75% of public expenditure.)

Since 1^st April 2009, the donor site database has been extended to the entire area of Saxony-Anhalt, with the project title "Information System on Nature-Oriented Greening Measures (INB) and Donor Site Register Saxony-Anhalt". Since then, the project has been located at the Anhalt University of Applied Sciences, Bernburg. The funding is granted within the framework of the rural development programme (EPLR) of the state of Saxony-Anhalt. The EPLR is jointly financed by the European Union, the Federal Republic of Germany and the State of Saxony-Anhalt. Under this programme, the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD) contributes up to 75% of public expenditure. In a first project phase (running until 31 March 2010), the focus was on the regions of the districts of Altmarkkreis Salzwedel, Börde, Jerichower Land, Wittenberg, Salzlandkreis and Anhalt-Bitterfeld which have not yet been integrated into the project. In a second project phase between April 2010 and the end of September 2013, the above-mentioned districts, among others, were integrated into the project. Further project content was the exemplary development of a register of sites for measures, which contains potential recipient sites for an upgrading using near-natural greening methods. For this purpose, a cooperation was established with the district of Wittenberg in eastern Saxony-Anhalt.

Within the follow-up project (until 30 September 2015), the donor sites of the first survey years were evaluated and checked for their further suitability as donor sites. Furthermore, new donor sites were collected in order to expand the database for the state of Saxony-Anhalt. The transfer of knowledge on nature-oriented greening measures into practice was supported by the organisation of workshops.

In the second follow-up project (project period 02/2017 to 09/2020), a specified evaluation of donor sites resulted in a selection of optimal donor sites - providing a pool of sites suitable for large-scale revegetations, showing optimal species inventory, management potential and biomass gain. As in the previous projects, workshops and field trips ensured the transfer of information. Ongoing greening projects were accompanied professionally. New to the second follow-up project were germination trials with meadow threshings, which have been harvested from three different donor sites. The germination capacity of the samples, which were subjected to different storage conditions, were tested. These tests were carried out in close cooperation with the Landesanstalt für Landwirtschaft und Gartenbau, Abteilung Saatgutprüfung und -anerkennung (state institute for agriculture and horticulture, department seed testing and certification), in Halle.
In addition, experiments with a meadow-seed harvester ("eBeetle 2.0"), which should enable a gentle and efficient brushing of the seeds from the plants of a donor site, were implemented. Usage of the eBeetle 2.0 enables harvesting areas that are difficult of access. Beside the applicability test of the eBeetle 2.0 at different sites, the quality of the so obtained threshing material was also be examined.

The current and third follow-up project titled "Extension and support of the donor area cadastre Saxony-Anhalt and the information system for natural vegetation - Intensification and extension of knowledge transfer for the upgrading and development of valuable FFH open land habitats" (project period 10/2020 to 05/2022) ties in with the contant of the former projects. New donor sites will be added to the donor site data base and excisting data will be updated. The germination tests will be continued to gain long term data and in addition species specific germination tests will be carried out. Workshops will be organised and a broshure with guidelines for near-natural greening measures in communities will be developed and used for further knowledge transfer.
